{Review} Organic food delivery from Munching Mongoose

How great is it to receive organic food on your doorstep every week as if you were just at a market, what a brilliant concept by Munching Mongoose.

What I really love about blogging is to have a platform to share great recipes, products and then also great businesses that have so much to offer. I have known about Munching mongoose for a while now but never got around to order anything from them yet, so I was super excited when Brad asked me to collaborate with them.

Who are they and what do they do?

They are passionate about looking after your health and the environment. The Munching Mongoose was born out of a simple idea – source and gather organic food and artisan products and make it available to others. Everyone who signs up becomes part of the mongaggle and then they have Maningi, their mongoose mascot that runs around all day, foraging new ingredients and suppliers. Maningi means “plenty” in Shona, and they live up to that name – providing plenty of goodness, plenty of value and plenty of fun!

How do you order?

I ordered my first box two weeks ago, and the whole process was a breeze. You sign up to their website and choose the size or type of box you want (There is also a banting option). You need to pay a R250 fully refundable deposit to cover the empty crate and glass bottles-just in case anything gets broken, damaged or lost.

How does the delivery work?

On Monday mornings you will get an e-mail of your week’s order, you have until Tue to amend or add anything to your order. There are also great organic meat and breakfast options you can add. The content changes each week and you will be spoiled for choice with different varieties of cheeses, bread, fruits, and vegetables.

You will get a final e-mail on Thursday to let you know when the Mobile Mongoose will be dropping off your crate of organic goodness. It felt like Christmas when our order arrived. And the quality and freshness were amazing. It was like I was just at the farmer’s market but without the effort of traveling and deciding what to buy. It also forces you to experiment with vegetables that you might not be that familiar with. You can cancel or resume your orders at any time. Or pause your order for the week.

My challenge

I ordered the midi box and this was the content: pears, onions, lemons, swiss chard, cauliflower, runner beans, baby gem squash. The other products were 2L full cream milk, fresh rye bread, a dozen eggs, Camembert and Montasio cheeses and a weekly surprise. We got chocolate and a bottle of red wine as the ‘surprise’ products. We were so excited about all our ”luxury” goodies we might have overindulged on the cheese, wine and chocolate. As a family of four, this box will not quite last a whole week and I think the large box is more suitable for more than two people.

My challenge was to cook a few recipes from my box and meal plan a week of recipes. I did use a few staples that were in my cupboards already but did not buy any out of season fruits and vegetables or loads of extras. My planning also did not include snack foods for my children.

My lovely photographer friend  Tracey Kelsey was more than willing to come and take a few pictures of all the foodie goodness. I had two hours to get the food on the table. I will be sharing the recipes in the next few blog posts.

Why order from Munching mongoose?

Because they are great!! If you have been wanting to eat more organic food without driving all over Joburg sourcing ingredients then the Munching mongoose is a great option. You will not be disappointed. Cost wise, I think they are still very reasonable but you also need to know that you will be ordering organic food and you will have the luxury of a home delivery.

Look out for the recipes I will be sharing and also enter our Facebook and Instagram give-away.
