Why this matters more than ever

After teaching Home Economics/Food Technology for over 10 years in London, I saw a clear gap in the South African Curriculum. Many children were growing up without basic cooking skills.

In countries like Japan, Sweden, Norway, and England, cooking and food education are part of the school curriculum.

But many children today are missing out on these essential life skills.

And yet, every child grows up needing to feed themselves.

A structured cooking club designed by a teacher

Wooden Spoon Kids is an online cooking club created by a qualified Consumer Science teacher with over 20 years of experience.

Children don’t just follow recipes -they:

  • Learn real cooking techniques
  • Build independence and confidence
  • Develop a lifelong understanding of food

All through fun, engaging lessons they actually enjoy.

More than just cooking

It starts with a simple recipe but quickly becomes so much more. Children grow in confidence and independence in the kitchen. They begin helping more, trying more -sometimes even cooking on their own.

Meals become something you enjoy together. Fussy eaters become a little more curious. And without even realising it that weekly lesson becomes one less meal to plan. They rewatch, remake, and build a recipe folder they’re proud of.

Real learning, naturally

Measuring, timing, and following steps – real maths. Seeing how ingredients change – real science. Problem-solving, independence, creativity all through something they love doing.

The kind of learning that lasts

It’s practical, hands-on, and confidence-building. Not just cooking, a life skill they’ll use forever.

How We Choose Our Recipes

At the end of each term, students can suggest recipes -and then we vote together on what to cook next! When selecting recipes, I also make sure we:

  • Explore new skills and techniques
  • Use ingredients we haven’t covered before
  • Keep recipes affordable and realistic for families
  • Use ingredients that are easy to find in local supermarkets even if you live on a farm in Prieska
  • All recipes are tested in advance
  • Each recipe has 6 steps or less

Each term follows a simple structure:

  • 5 x easy dinner recipes
  • 1 x breakfast recipe
  • 1 x fake-away meal
  • 1 x baking challenge

A structured, fun way for children to build real-life cooking skills week by week

What Parents Are Saying

It’s not always just about reviews -it’s about what we see happening in real life:

  • Children showing up for class every week
  • Members continuing into a second term since launch
  • Some students joining us for a second year (after early pilot classes)
  • Parents sponsoring friends so they can join too
  • Dads and daughters cooking together
  • Moms learning alongside their children (but be warned teens prefer you stay out of the kitchen while they are cooking 😄)

“We keep making your recipes again and again.”

“We finally have new, interesting meals on rotation in our kitchen.”

“We’re learning things you can’t find in a recipe book.”
