I'm sure the Stroganov family enjoyed a little Tchaikovsky while tucking into their creamy Beef Stroganoff back in the late 1800s. 🎻😄

Beef Stroganoff originated in Russia and was named after the wealthy Stroganov family. Legend has it that the dish was created by a French chef working for the family.

This week in Cooking Club, we're making our own cheat's version with beef mince. A little easier on the budget, but just as delicious, creamy and comforting. Especially with all this rainy weather in the Western Cape! 🌧️

We're also exploring different types of mushrooms and learning some fascinating food science along the way.

🍄 Did you know that mushrooms can produce vitamin D when exposed to UV light, much like our skin does when exposed to sunlight?

A little food history, a little food science and a delicious family dinner made from scratch.

And the best part? The kids are making dinner! ❤️

Some exciting news! ❤️

On Thursday, I’ll be chatting to Anthea Fredericks on @rsg_100104fm - Groeipyne about something very close to my heart: getting children into the kitchen.

It feels like such an honour to be speaking on a radio station I grew up with. My mom always says that RSG is her university, she is always learning something new.👌

We’ll also be speaking in Afrikaans, which makes this conversation even more special to me. My business has always been conducted in English, and after so many years of teaching in English, it comes naturally to me. But I am very much an Afrikaans girl, a true boeremeisie at heart.❤️

We’ll be chatting about why cooking is such an important life skill, and why the kitchen is such a great learning environment.

Tune in to RSG on Thursday, 22 October, at 12:30! You can also listen to it on the Potgooi afterwards if you can’t listen live.

Also a shoutout to @janamusiek for this beautiful version of Laurika Rauch's-Huis song.

When parents start raving about your classes in group chats you're not even part of… you know it's working. 🥹

This review was forwarded to me by a friend, and I'm still smiling. A 13-year-old learning real meals in a community of kids from all over.

That's exactly what we're here for. ❤️

Term 4 of our online Cooking Club kicks off THIS WEEK! 🍳

Hope to see you there.

Here are actually 8 Pantry Staples but who is counting🤣.

Our Cooking Club champions unprocessed, wholefoods with short ingredient lists. Every week, when I share our recipes with the Wooden Spoon Kids families, I include a shopping list and product recommendations. These are 6 pantry staples I recommend again and again, and you'll find them at your local supermarket. 👇

🌶 @capeherbandspice -Smoked paprika: One of the most versatile spices in my cupboard. It adds loads of flavour to so many different dishes.

🫒 @saoliveindustry -SA Olive olive oil: Look for olive oil that has been approved by SA Olive. [Add your reason here.]

🥥 Kara coconut milk: I always choose the milk, not the cream. It's lovely and creamy, and the water and solids don't separate in the tin.

🌾 @gideonmilling -Stone ground self-raising flour: Our go-to for 2-ingredient naan and pizza. Bonus: it's stone ground, and Gideon Milling doesn't use glyphosate on their wheat. [Add a line on the gluten-free flour.]

🌿@pesto_princess- Pesto Princess pesto: Small jar, big flavour. We champion home cooking, but sometimes we all need a shortcut, and this adds a punch to pasta, dips, breads, pastries, pizza and salads. The list goes on.

🍲 @nomubrands: Concentrated flavour, a little goes along way.

🥜 @buttanut: The best peanut butter!! Great to use in sauces, smoothies and baking!

@healthconnectionwholefood for Gluten-Free flour. Some of our families eat a GF diet and this flour works well for easy baking.

What's always in YOUR pantry? 👇

There’s something special about watching them start to figure things out for themselves.

A sauce.
A recipe.
A knife.
A meal.

Little skills that build confidence and, over time, independence.

Because learning to cook isn't just about food. It's learning to look after yourself.

Independence starts in the kitchen. ❤️

Our new term starts 13 October.

One thing I happily pay for every month… 👀

Not a sponsored post ( I wish😉)

@checkers_sixty60 has saved me SO many times.

Because no matter how organised I think I am, there is always that ONE ingredient I forget. 😂

And when you’re about to start a cooking class, there isn’t time to drive to the shops.

The R99 membership has been worth it for me too. Free delivery is brilliant, but I especially like the 10% monthly in-store discount.

Just make sure you switch it on every month! I definitely didn’t realise that at first. 🙈

Anyone else constantly forgetting ONE thing? 😂

SIMON’S TOWN WITH TWEENS & TEENS ⚓️🐧🇿🇦

We recently spent the day in Simon’s Town and there is SO much to do with older kids. Here’s what we fitted in, plus a few things we’ll be saving for next time!

⚓️ @assegaai_submarine_museum_
No booking needed. This was a HUGE hit with my 12-year-old. My 16-year-old had also just learnt about Emily Hobhouse in History at school, so it was pretty cool to discover that one of our decommissioned submarines were named after her. This is a 2-hour guided tour costing R40-R80 per person.

🥢 Korean lunch 🇰🇷
We love Korean food and this was a must for us. My daughter is also on a 150-day Duolingo streak learning Korean, so we had to celebrate! 😂

Salty Sea Dog is also great option for lunch if you rather want fish and chips to eat on the jetty.

🛍️ Thrift & antique shops
We wandered through the little shops and found plenty to look at.

🚶‍♀️ Explore Simon’s Town
Take a walk through the pretty streets. Some parts have serious Greek-island vibes!

🌊 The scenic drive home
We headed home via Kommetjie, Noordhoek and Chapmans Peak. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Coming from the Free State and Gauteng, I honestly hadn't explored this side of Cape Town properly before.

Things we didn't get to, but are adding to the list:

Boulders Beach to see the penguins. A hike to Admiral’s Waterfall and a visit to the toy Museum.

To finish of the submarine theme, we watched

🎬 Crimson Tide with Denzel Washington on Disney+ in the evening.

Save this for your next family day out in Simon’s Town! ❤️
