Greek Chicken Skewers & Tzatziki: A Recipe That Brings Families Together
One of my favourite recipes from this term’s cooking club is Greek chicken skewers with homemade tzatziki. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a recipe that has quietly woven itself into the heart of what Wooden Spoon Kids is all about.
For me, the cooking club has always been about more than just teaching recipes. It’s about building skills, confidence, and curiosity—one recipe at a time. Watching children carefully thread their skewers, sprinkle fragrant herbs, taste their creamy, garlicky tzatziki, and proudly serve their creations is incredibly rewarding. These moments are where life skills meet joy.
What I love most is how these recipes bring families together. I’ve seen parents and children laughing and chatting in the kitchen, discovering the magic of cooking side by side. Families sharing a meal, trying something new, and spending real quality time together—these are the moments that make all the teaching worthwhile.
As with all our cooking club recipes, I try to keep the ingredients simple, with flavour coming from fresh herbs and spices. Everything is easily available in South African supermarkets, and there are never more than six steps in our methods. Cooking should be fun, approachable, and stress-free for families—and this recipe ticks all those boxes.
And it’s so versatile! Imagine the sizzle of juicy chicken on the BBQ, the golden edges from oven-roasting, or the crispy, caramelised bites from pan-frying. Serve it with a crisp salad for a light lunch, wrap it in flatbread for a quick family dinner, or make a large batch for meal prep. The creamy, tangy tzatziki adds the perfect refreshing contrast every time.
Cooking with children is about more than following a recipe—it’s about nurturing independence, creativity, and confidence. This Greek chicken dish does all that, while being deliciously adaptable, summery, and fun to make.
If there’s one thing I hope every child in the cooking club takes away, it’s that the kitchen is a place of connection, learning, and joy. And maybe, just maybe, this recipe becomes a little family favourite of yours too—the kind that fills your kitchen with laughter, delicious aromas, and happy memories.
