Proats So Easy, the Gamechanger Breakfast cereal

Mornings can feel like a race against the clock. As a busy mum, I wanted one thing: a breakfast my children could make themselves before school that would actually keep them full until break time.

Not a bowl of sugary cereal that leaves them hungry an hour later. Not just a slice of toast and an egg. Not a breakfast that’s high in carbohydrates but low in protein.I wanted something made with real ingredients, packed with protein and fibre, that was ready in minutes with nothing more than boiling water. After plenty of experimenting (and lots of taste-testing!), Proats So Easy was born.

It’s now a staple in our kitchen, and I honestly can’t imagine our mornings without it.

Why I Love This Recipe

Most instant breakfast cereals are convenient, but they’re often high in refined carbohydrates and low in protein. This combination can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly before dropping again, leaving children (and adults!) hungry long before lunchtime.

Proats So Easy is different.

Each serving provides approximately:

  • 24g protein
  • 7g fibre
  • Around 300 calories

That combination helps create a breakfast that’s filling, nourishing and balanced, and you won’t find these nutritional benefits in Pronutro or Futurelife.

Why These Ingredients Work

Oats

Oats are one of my favourite pantry staples. They’re rich in beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that slows digestion and helps release energy more gradually. This can help keep blood sugar levels steadier and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Oats are also packed with important nutrients like manganese, magnesium, iron and B vitamins.

Flaxseeds

These tiny seeds are nutritional powerhouses. They add extra fibre, healthy omega-3 fats and plant compounds called lignans. Together, they help make this breakfast even more satisfying while supporting digestive and heart health.

Whey Protein

Protein is the ingredient that transforms this from an ordinary bowl of oats into a breakfast that truly satisfies. Adding whey protein helps to:

  • Keep you fuller for longer.
  • Slow the digestion of carbohydrates.
  • Support muscle growth and repair.
  • Reduce mid-morning hunger.
  • Help maintain more stable energy levels.

I developed this recipe using MetaLab Bridge Vanilla Milk Whey Protein, which gives it a delicious creamy vanilla flavour. I haven’t tested it with other protein powders, so the taste and texture may vary.

Milk Powder

Milk powder adds extra protein, calcium and creaminess without needing fresh milk. It also means you can keep the mix in the pantry and simply add boiling water whenever you need a quick breakfast.

Cinnamon

Besides making the porridge taste like apple pie, cinnamon may help support healthy blood sugar regulation when eaten as part of a balanced diet. It also adds natural sweetness without adding sugar.

Apples

Fresh apples provide natural sweetness, extra fibre and vitamin C while adding lovely flavour and texture. I simply grate fresh apples into my mix. You could dehydrate apples first if you prefer, but I found it took longer than it was worth. Fresh apples work beautifully.

Why Protein and Fibre Matter at Breakfast

Breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day. A meal that’s high in protein and fibre takes longer to digest, helping you stay fuller for longer and providing a steadier release of energy. This means fewer mid-morning hunger pangs, better concentration at school or work, and less temptation to reach for sugary snacks. For growing children, protein also plays an important role in supporting healthy growth and development, while fibre helps keep their digestive system healthy.

A Homemade Alternative to Boxed Breakfasts

One of the things I love most about this recipe is knowing exactly what’s in it. There are no unnecessary additives or artificial flavours-just simple, wholesome ingredients that work together to create a balanced breakfast. It’s my homemade upgrade to the instant breakfast cereals many of us grew up with.

Want to Try Different Flavours?

Once you’ve mastered the base recipe, there are so many delicious ways to change it up. Here are a few ideas: Banana Bread, Strawberries and Cream, Lemon Poppy Seed, Carrot Cake. I will keep on working on some new flavour combos. The possibilities are endless, and that’s one of the reasons I love this recipe so much. Once you have the basic mix, you can adapt it to suit your family’s favourite flavours or whatever you have in the cupboard.

The Best Part

My children genuinely enjoy it. They can make it themselves before school by simply adding boiling water, stirring, and waiting two or three minutes. As a mum, that’s a huge win. Fast for them. Stress-free for me.
And I know they’re starting the day with a nourishing breakfast that’s designed to keep them satisfied for longer. If you try Proats So Easy, I’d love to hear what you think. And if you come up with a flavour combination we haven’t tried yet, let me know-I always love testing new ideas in the Wooden Spoon Kitchen!

Description

It’s my homemade upgrade to the instant breakfast cereals many of us grew up with. But that is also high in Protein and Fibre.

Ingredients

4 cups oats
8 tsp flaxseeds
4 scoops @metalabofficial Bridge Vanilla Milk Whey Protein (using the 34 g scoop that comes with the tub)
4 scoops Klim milk powder (using the same 34 g scoop for consistency)
4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp salt
4 medium apples(Optional) dehydrated and blended. I just used fresh, found dehydrating apples in the air-fryer a little too time consuming)

Instructions

Add the oats and flaxseeds to a blender. Blend until smooth. Add to a mixing bowl and add the rest of the ingredients. Stir until mixed. Add to a large airtight jar.
To serve:
Add 80-100 g of the mix to a bowl, pour over boiling water, stir well, and leave to stand for 2–3 minutes.

Notes

A little note: I haven’t tested this recipe with any other protein powders. I developed it using MetaLab Bridge Vanilla Milk Whey Protein, and we love the creamy vanilla flavour it gives the porridge.
